What Nissan Navara D27 2026 Owners Should Know Before Upgrading
Nissan launched the fifth-generation Navara D27 in Australian showrooms in March 2026. The D27 shares its ladder frame platform with the Mitsubishi Triton and returns to rear leaf springs after the D23’s rear coil spring setup caused years of ride quality and warranty problems. At Opposite Lock Cardiff in Newcastle, we already stock D27 specific products including the Tough Dog suspension lift kit and Safari V-SPEC snorkel. This article gives 2026 Navara owners a clear breakdown of what changed and what upgrades are available right now.

What Changed on the D27 Navara
Nissan built the D27 on the Mitsubishi Triton’s Alliance ladder frame rather than a standalone Nissan platform. The engine, transmission and body structure carry over from the Triton. The suspension is where the D27 becomes its own vehicle. Nissan engaged Premcar, the Melbourne firm behind previous Navara Warrior programs, to develop three separate suspension tunes for Australian conditions. The SL grade gets a heavy-duty work tune. The ST gets a comfort-focused tune. The ST-X and PRO-4X get a tune built around technical off-road performance. The rear suspension also changed. The D23 used rear coil springs that caused ongoing ride and payload issues. The D27 goes back to leaf springs at the rear and keeps coil springs at the front. Premcar fitted larger Australian-made dampers with an internal rebound spring at the front to improve control without losing ride comfort.

Why the Rear Suspension Change Matters for Upgrades
The switch from rear coil springs to rear leaf springs changes which aftermarket products suit this platform. D23 Navara suspension products do not fit the D27. The rear spring configuration, u-bolt hardware and mounting points are all different. Tough Dog developed their D27 suspension lift kit from scratch for this platform. This is the same approach they took with the HiLux N90 when Toyota changed that vehicle’s geometry. Call us on (02) 4058 1911 to discuss the correct suspension setup for your D27 grade and how you use the vehicle.
Which NSW Owners Benefit Most From D27 Upgrades
- Tradies and Fleet Operators: The SL grade ships with a heavy-duty Premcar tune designed for constant work loads. Owners who run at or near maximum payload regularly benefit from a suspension upgrade that holds correct ride height under load. A snorkel suits tradies who work on dusty construction and mining sites across regional NSW.
- Touring and Towing Owners: The ST and ST-X grades get comfort and off-road tunes that handle NSW corrugated back roads better than the D23 did before aftermarket work. A suspension lift kit extends ground clearance for owners who explore remote tracks. A snorkel protects the 2.4 litre bi-turbo diesel during river crossings and outback travel.
- Off-Road Owners: The PRO-4X gets the performance tune, electronic rear differential lock and seven drive modes. It provides the strongest factory off-road base of any Navara generation. Owners who push the PRO-4X on serious 4WD tracks benefit from a lift kit that adds clearance beyond the factory 228mm.
