1. Water: A factory intake sits low in the engine bay. Drive into water deeper than that intake and the engine draws water instead of air. Water does not compress, so the piston hits it and bends a con rod or cracks the block. Hydraulic lock is an engine rebuild, not a roadside fix. A sealed snorkel raises the intake above the bonnet line so the engine keeps breathing air through a crossing.
2. Dust: On a dirt road the vehicle generates its own dust cloud at wheel height. A low intake pulls that straight into the filter. Roof height air carries a fraction of the particulate, so the filter lasts longer and less abrasive material reaches the intake tract.

316 Stainless Steel Snorkel vs Plastic

Grade 316 is marine stainless. Boat builders specify it because it survives salt air and sustained water contact without pitting, which is the same reason it holds up on a 4WD running Stockton Beach or the Port Stephens tracks. Polyethylene snorkels do the job when new. Give them a few Newcastle summers and the sun-facing side chalks and fades, and the air ram picks up chips from branches on a tight track. Stainless does neither. There is a sound difference too. Air through a metal tube produces a deeper induction note under load than air through plastic.
